MĀORI SERVICES AND RESEARCH MATERIAL AT AUCKLAND LIBRARIES – PART TWO WITH DENA JACOB

Kia Ora koutou katoa,

This newsletter I make mention of the Heritage Māori collections: Ngā kohinga taonga tuku iho Māori.

Māori collections are held at the majority of Auckland libraries throughout the region. They include both current and heritage materials.  Our Photo and Image collections can be accessed online via Kura kura.aucklandlibraries.govt.nz/.

Kura is our online index and database of materials held in either special Research collections or in our Documentary Heritage collections.  The photographic collections hold amazing pockets of learning and time captures.

Often collections are curated into exhibitions curated by Sir George Grey specialist staff and a particular standout includes the exhibition titled Manatunga (http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/dbtw-wpd/virt-exhib/Manatunga/index.htm).

Other collections of interest we have become kaitiaki of are the JT Diamond collection. The content held in this collection relates to West Auckland Local history, from myth and legends of the Turehu through to the middens of Pā sites within West Auckland.

Next newsletter we can chat about the Manuscripts we hold including the Māori  Land Court Minute Books and its index. A wealth of whakapapa is held in these books and searching them can be tricky.

Happy Researching e hoa mā.
Dena
